During the dry season food is scarce and the children suffer the most. A one hundred pound bag of beans cost around $60. Four of these bags can supply food and seeds for a village of 100 people until the rain begins.
After the dry season people are grateful for the rains. During this time, water is abundant and the planting season begins. But with the rains also comes malaria. Children are affected the most. A four day dosage for a young child is only 50 cents. In Pokot it is estimated that 20% of children under the age of 5 die due to malaria.
